It shouldn’t surprise anyone that a farmer’s daughter gets excited by fresh from-the-earth produce. I love it! When your food actually does something good for you and your family, with no preservatives, no additives, no chemicals – that’s what I’m alllll… about. Now I know we’re all busy and we don’t have time between basketball & baseball practice, music lessons, and homework help to be a professional chef who cooks fresh food all day, every day. But there’s no excuse not to try. Why is it that we use our busy schedules as an excuse to skip real ingredients and compromise? Personally, I am over it!
One thing I do at the grocery store to find “real food” is to look for the Non-GMO label. Genetically Modifying Organisms (GMO) actually causes unstable combinations of genes that do not occur in nature. I have made it a point to make sure every ingredient within my Sweet Potato Tomato Sauce is 100% real and Non-GMO.
How Do You Know?
As I developed my sweet potato tomato sauce I was forced to educate myself on SO many different details and processes. Bringing this creation to the shelf was “uncharted territory” for me, as I had to learn everything from the tiniest details regarding labels, to finding a food scientist, and even getting a barcode then finding a warehouse to store my sauce after production. It was a lot of information to mentally manage. And while all of that was an enormous education, nothing impressed me more than having my sauce verified by the Non-GMO project. This was a game changer on some levels – and it brought forth the value of having a completely Non-GMO product as very serious business.
One of the most important things you can look for while shopping in the grocery store is the little blue and green label which states “Non-GMO Project Certified”. You can see this on the label for my Sweet Potato Tomato Sauce above, right next to my logo. The health benefits of all the ingredients in the sauce are already very beneficial, so having them be free of genetically modified organisms makes it even better for you!
The base of my sauce starts with the sweet potatoes which I source directly from my family farm in Bakersfield. So no GMO’s there! We are diligent in taking attentive care to the crops and cultivating a healthy environment for the sweet potatoes to grow in, so the healthy lifestyle literally starts while in the ground. My sauce itself is also low in fat, with no artificial ingredients and no sugar added.
In the beginning, in order for me to earn the Non-GMO verification, I did have to switch a few ingredients. At the Non-GMO headquarters, they go through every… single…. ingredient and then, they go through exactly where and how each is grown, manufactured and stored. Not one detail can be out of alignment. This gave me a headache during my first rodeo with them, since answering their complicated and super-thorough questions for their audit was not something I went to college for. But after replacing a couple of ingredients to obtain their seal of approval, I must tell you, it was worth it. I slept better. I knew (and now know) down to the teeny, tiny drops of lemon juice in my sauce that everything, EVERYTHING is incredibly safe, clean, and free of genetically modified organisms. I can look each customer in the eye and say, “Yes, my sauce is Non-GMO”, and it makes me so proud my label sports their butterfly logo.
A Healthy Life is a Good Life
If there’s one thing I’m passionate about, it’s living a healthy lifestyle and providing that for my family and others. This starts with the decisions at the store, and picking up products like my Sweet Potato Tomato Sauce to get you started. Moving to Non-GMO certified foods is extremely important, and is becoming easier and more accessible if you know what to look for and where. I have a new appreciation for anything that has the Non-GMO Project logo on it. It tells me the homework was done, checked, double-checked and triple-checked! Bottom line: I have confidence in my purchase. So start your journey to a healthier lifestyle and check out where you can find my sauce below!
